چکیده

Satellite observations from 1985–2006 indicate that in the last 2 decades the temperature in the upper layer of the Mediterranean Sea has been increasing at an average (±SD) rate of 0.03 ± 0.008°C yr–1 for the western basin and 0.05 ± 0.009°C yr–1 for the eastern basin. The increases in temperature are not constant throughout the year but occur primarily during May, June and July. Maximum increases of 0.16°C yr–1 are found in June in the Tyrrhenian, Ligurian and Adriatic Seas and close to the African coast. The Aegean Sea shows maximum change in sea surface temperature during August. Only the statistically significant results are presented.

Long-Term Responses of the Endemic Reef-Builder Cladocora caespitosa to Mediterranean Warming

Recurrent climate-induced mass-mortalities have been recorded in the Mediterranean Sea over the past 15 years. Cladocora caespitosa, the sole zooxanthellate scleractinian reef-builder in the Mediterranean, is among the organisms affected by these episodes. Extensive bioconstructions of this endemic coral are very rare at the present time and are threatened by several stressors. In this study, w...

Eastern Mediterranean surface water temperatures and DO composition during deposition of sapropels in the late Quaternary

[1] Water column stratification increased at climatic transitions from cold to warm periods during the late Quaternary and led to anoxic conditions and sapropel formation in the deep eastern Mediterranean basins. Highresolution data sets on sea-surface temperatures (SST) (estimated from U37 k0 indices) and dO of planktonic foraminifer calcite (dOfc) across late Pleistocene sapropel intervals sh...

Understanding the Causes of Recent Warming of Mediterranean Waters. How Much Could Be Attributed to Climate Change?

During the past two decades, Mediterranean waters have been warming at a rather high rate resulting in scientific and social concern. This warming trend is observed in satellite data, field data and model simulations, and affects both surface and deep waters throughout the Mediterranean basin. However, the warming rate is regionally different and seems to change with time, which has led to the ...

Observing The Mediterranean Sea from space: 21 years of Pathfinder-AVHRR Sea Surface Temperatures (1985 to 2005). Re-analysis and validation

The time series of satellite infrared AVHRR data from 1985 to 2005 has been used to produce a daily series of optimally interpolated SST maps over the regular grid of the operational MFSTEP OGCM model of the Mediterranean basin. A complete validation of this OISST (Optimally Interpolated Sea Surface Temperature) product with in situ measurements has been performed in order to exclude any possib...
